Happy Canada Day!

Fresh strawberries from the garden an early summer treat

July 1st long weekend is usually marked with sunshine, barbeques, festivities, fireworks and of course Canadian flags everywhere. For us grander on the west cost the start of July also means the start of planning for fall, it doesn’t seem like summer has even started, June was so grey and rainy but the days are ticking on and good weather or not this weekend I am starting fall veggies. Fall is primarily devoted to the cabbage family, its time to start all kinds kales, flowering cabbages, sprouting broccolis and overwinter cabbages. If you still have room in the garden its not too late for carrots, beets and chard but starting this group in July yields with mixed results, when the fall and winter turns out mild I have harvested fresh carrots right into January!
