Ornamental Vegetables: Next Exit

Bright Lights Chard

In you live in the Burnaby area chances are at some point you will  get stuck in traffic at the Kensington exit for the #1 highway. Well thank you city of Burnaby for a least providing a beautiful creative garden to look at while we all sit idling in our cars.  Just outside the Shadbolt Centre the city of Burnaby plants this ever changing large border garden their colourful display of bright lights chard blends seamlessly with the other ornamental plantings, followed by globe artichokes in the back ground.  What impressed me most about this garden close up, is its sheer size when seen from Canada way it looks like a cute little border but get up close on the side walk and in fact the chard is massive standing 2 feet tall!  I always eat my chard before it gets to that size but next year I am going to try a mass planting of this interesting big scale ornamental edible.
